The Cape Neddick Light Station is located in York, ME. In 1874 Congress appropriated $15,000 to build a light station at the "Nubble" . It became Operational in 1879. Many shipwrecks occurred prior to its construction. The bell tower was removed in 1961.
Each Christmas the Lighthouse is decorated with lights. At the end of July it is lit again for a week as part of the "Christmas in July" celebrations. The lighthouse is also illuminated in blue for in April for autism awareness month.
The tower is lined with brick and sheathed with cast iron. It stands 41 feet (12 m) tall from its base on the island. The light is 88 feet (27 m) above sea level and is visible for 13 nautical miles on a clear day. In 1987 the Nubble became the last lighthouse in North America to be automated.
